Welcome to the LifeBack Project

The LifeBack Project is a Norwegian national resource and expertise centre established on 1 January 2007. It serves as a link between individuals and the municipal and county authorities.

FOR THE PUBLIC AUTHORITIES: We provide know-how, guidance and expertise in situations where municipal and county authorities wish to establish reparation schemes providing compensation and an unreserved apology to individuals who were subjected to degrading conditions and treatment while they were in public authority care.

FOR THE INDIVIDUAL: During the reparation process, we provide free advice, support and guidance to individuals who were subjected to abuse and violations while in public authority care, and who now wish to put their painful past behind them.

FOR CURRENT CHILD WELFARE AGENCIES: We offer expertise and experience within various specialist fields with the aim of strengthening current child welfare and public sector care provision.

On this website you will find updated information about our work, and news of what’s going on in the various Norwegian municipalities.

  • “ALT OM OPPREISNING” (“EVERYTHING ABOUT REPARATION”, in Norwegian) is the main item on the green menu bar displayed beneath our logo. Here you’ll find information about the various reparation and compensation schemes in Norway, links to application forms, news about what’s happening around the country, inquiry reports, key decisions, and a link to the Norwegian Parliament’s compensation payment scheme, etc.
  • Under the heading “For det offentlige” (“For the public authorities”, in Norwegian) we have set out guidance for county and municipal authorities who are thinking of establishing good reparation schemes.
  • Under the heading “Om Prosjekt Oppreisning” (“About the LifeBack Project”, in Norwegian), you will find items such as our strategic plan, a list of our references, a description of our services, our annual reports and contact information.
  • In 1954 Norway adopted some of the world’s first legislation governing child welfare. We also enacted the world’s first ever Child Welfare Act. Under the heading “Lover før og nå” (“Legislation – past and present”, in Norwegian) you can read about this and other legislative Acts, and the statutory Regulations that accompany them.
  • Under the item “Aktuelt” (“News”, in Norwegian) on the right of the page below the menu bar, you will find news, press releases and extracts from media reports.
  • Under the heading “Lenker” (“Links”, in Norwegian) on the right of the page you will find links to support groups and organisations.
  • Under the heading “Barnehjemsbarn” (“Children in Care", in Norwegian) you will find links to “Oppreisning ABC” (an A to Z about Reparation), “Søknad 123” (an easy guide to completing applications), a brief history of child welfare, the current status of child welfare services in Norway, LifeBack thoughts and poems, and the lyrics to the song “Your little boat”. At present, these links are published in Norwegian only.
  • Under the heading “Hva skjer I andre land” (“News from other countries”, in Norwegian), you can find out about what’s happening in the rest of the world.
